JACKSON'S OWN: KINGS & QUEENS OF CORBET'S

DMOS’s home of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is also home to some of the finest skiing and snowboarding in the world. Its iconic peaks and massive cliff bands are the stuff of legend, as are the achievements of some of the skiers and snowboarders who set upon it every season.

Within Jackson Hole’s resort boundaries lies one of—if not the most—well-known steep skiing lines in North America, Corbet’s Couloir, named after pioneering ski mountaineer, Barry Corbet, who noticed the small, snow-filled opening near the top of Jackson’s Rendezvous Mountain in the 1960s. Unbeknownst to Corbet, today’s skiers and riders wouldn’t just descend the line—they’d take to the air, progressing skiing in ways even most professionals didn’t think possible.

That’s why it’s now the site of the annual Kings and Queens of Corbet’s competition, which brings 24 of the best riders from across the globe to the iconic in-bounds run for one of the wildest, most unique contests in the world of winter sports. Kings & Queens is sponsored by heavyweights like GoPro and Red Bull, but behind the scenes, DMOS was hard at work.

Kings and Queens of Corbet’s pits athletes against one another in a peer-judged competition that has skiers and snowboarders going full send for the best of two runs down the Couloir. Once the athletes enter the chute and head toward the runout and the crowd, it’s up to each individual to select the most impressive line choice, utilizing a series of man-made jumps and features constructed by Jackson Hole’s terrain park crew to coax the highest score out of their run.

So it’s no surprise that they counted on DMOS shovels to ensure their kickers were meticulously groomed for maximum air on the massive lines.

Kings & Queens is always a huge event, and this year was no exception. 2020 King and Montana native Parkin Costain threw a double-backflip during his first of two runs, and CA-to-WY transplant Veronica Paulsen became the first woman to land a backflip into Corbet's Couloir.
